5/21/2006 Cloud Cult @ the CrocodileAck, I'm way behind in posting about this show, which was over a week ago. In a way, this show was a lot about the opening acts...
Up first were The Trucks, an all-girl synth-pop band from Bellingham. They have some potential for sure. Their musicianship is kind of lacking, but they seem to have a knack for writing super catchy pop hooks. It'll be interesting to see how they develop.
Up next was Daylight Basement who were so awesome I could not stop grinning through the whole set. The lead singer participated in the Valentine's Day tribute to 69 Love Songs, singing "Reno Dakota". Anyway, she has got massive star power and adorable songs to boot - standouts in my memory 1 week later are "Just Kiss Me" and "My Guitar" ("When all my lovers are gone, I make love to my guitar..."). We've put their album in our eMusic queue and I can't wait to get it!!
Finally Cloud Cult took the stage and put on a terrific (multimedia) show. Two artists set up canvases on either side of the stage, and painted throughout the entire set. I cannot even begin to describe art intelligently so I'll just say that the one on the left was better than the one on the right :-) Behind the drummer there was a screen onto which they projected various video clips of random stuff. I guess that's what all the cool bands are doing these days.
They sounded great live, and who doesn't love a rock-n-roll cello? Although they seemed a bit shy up on stage at times, they still wow'ed me. The most powerfully affecting part of the show for me was a song he sang about his son, who died at age 2. It was a cheerful song, almost a celebration of life, and I got all choked up.
When they played in-studio at KEXP earlier that afternoon, I learned that they're a kind of grassroots environmentalist collective as well as being talented musicians. Rad.
Still and all, no show yet this year comes close to beating out U.S.E. for the title of greatest live show. So far I think the Valentine's Day tribute is the show of 2006, but that is sure to change assuming we see U.S.E. later this year :-) TrackbacksThe trackback URL for this entry is: http://cultfig.spaces.live.com/blog/cns!9CCAAA8C0692EB76!969.trak Weblogs that reference this entry
