Calexico @ the Showbox
I was really impressed by Calexico - they are incredibly talented musicians and deftly showcased the full range of their sound in front of a very appreciative audience. Some (newer) songs rocked pretty hard, with the horn players exchanging their trumpets for guitars or keyboards. Slightly older material featured the mariachi/southwest flair that really caught my attention a couple of years ago. I'm guessing I'm not the only one, if the roar of approval when the opening notes of "Alone Again Or" began is any indication!
So the band sounded terrfic and they clearly knew it. They seemed genuinely joyful on stage, like they were having the time of their lives up there. Their delight was palpable and (here I digress) for some reason I'm reminded now, as I continue to think about the book Soul of a Chef, of the descriptions of some of Keller's most talented sous chefs. Top performances... hmm...
Anyway, some random details:
- We missed the first opening act, Eric Bachmann, but saw the second - Salvador Doran accompanied himself on acoustic guitar for maybe 4-5 songs, all of which were sung in Spanish. I loved how he was looked - thick salt-and-pepper leonine wavy hair; snug jeans with reflective mirror studs down the outsides of the pant legs. Sweet! He had also clearly mastered the art of marching/dancing in place with lots of hip action, because the top of his head barely moved. All the action was below the waist, baby.
- Joey Burns... all I could think when he came out on stage was that he looked like a youth pastor! No joke, he had on plain tan slacks with four layers on top: a dark t-shirt, a plaid buttoning shirt, a dark v-neck vest, and an f'ing windbreaker. Awesome. He did wind up taking off the top 2 layers over the course of the evening.
- Some of the women at the foot of the stage were clearly vying for the attentions of the trumpet players. The feeling was entirely mutual. Those dudes were blatently on the make :-)
- Speaking of which, the taller trumpet player might be the best looking dude I've ever seen in an indie band.
- The slide guitar player often had a hilariously prim expression on his face. How can you look prissy while playing slide guitar?
- During the encore, Calexico brought out each of the opening acts they're touring with, so we did see Eric Bachmann. He came out for a lovely and inebriated version of Bob Dylan's "Lay Lady Lay", a song which seems to be really en vogue these days.
If Calexico is coming to a town near you, by all means, GO!
