Silversun Pickups and Voxtrot @ Neumo's

For the first time in a while, we went to a show to hear the opening acts. The headliner was Elefant, and neither of us really knew who that was, actually.

Silversun Pickups was the first band and they were goofy, cute, and fun. Oh, and loud! They kept making jokes about how they're not allowed back in Seattle and they've got some problem with the mayor. And that they can't play at the Chop Suey club because they bought drinks for underage kids... Regardless, they were great - they had a wonderful rawness to some of their sound, and they weren't afraid to deviate from the exact studio sound of their recorded songs. Excellent.

Voxtrot was not as good. It sounds like music we like, and we've liked the song or two that KEXP plays, but their live show was kind of forgettable. It also suffered from too much guitar distortion - Voxtrot's music and vocals are cleaner and more pop-like than the rocking of Silversun Pickups, and the distortion didn't suit them as well. I think I've figured out why some bands (Voxtrot anyway) have 2 guitarists... when the lead singer decides he just doesn't want to play his anymore because he'd rather jump around on the stage, someone else picks up the slack!

We left before Elefant took the stage so I can't report whether they were good or not. We left despite the fact that I was wearing my new Natalie Dee shirt... :-)
