12/28/2006 Markus Naslund is a big Swedish phonyI've known that for years. LCS Hockey finally caught up with me.
12/19/2006 T-birds 2 Everett 1 Sunday night, the 2nd place T-birds took on 1st place Everett. Bear in mind, however, that heading into Sunday's game Everett had amassed 55 points and a tremendous season win% of 86%, the highest in the entire WHL. Meanwhile, Seattle had 39 points and a 59% win%. Second through 4th place were almost indistinguishable (39, 38, 38 points) with 5th place being truly abysmal (23 points, 35%).Lots of Everett fans were in attendance at the Key! Their top player seemed to be injured and had been scratched from the lineup; still, it seemed this would be a tough challange for the T-birds who were coming off back-to-back games home-and-away with Spokane.
It turned out to be a good game. Both teams battled really hard all game long without letting up. Both teams, Everett in particular, applied extraordinary pressure when the opposing team had possession behind their own net - making it very difficult to advance the puck out of the defensive zone, much less put together an actual coordinated offensive attack. Both teams seemed to get sticks in the passing and shooting lanes, taking away chances. There were almost no shots on goal, probably due to a combination of fatigue and tight checking:
We were oddly impressed. Even if the score had been reversed, I think we'd have thought it was a very well-played game. The players disagree though:
Well, we enjoyed it anyway. 12/17/2006 Goaltender sanityI am making a lot of hockey-related posts lately. This is another one. According to an NYT article called Goalies Gone Normal: A Little South of Sanity, hockey goaltenders aren't as crazy as they used to be.
The reasons for this seem to have a lot to do with having actual coaches for the position. I was amazed to read that "Goalie coaches became standard in the N.H.L. in the 1980s, and they have worked their way into younger levels of the sport." It seems shocking to me that there weren't goalie coaches until so recently. But maybe kids used to become goalies because they weren't good skaters? Anyway, some other interesting tidbits:
On the whole (for them and their teams) being less mentally unbalanced is a good thing. But I have a huge soft spot in my heart for goalies and their quirks. I love trying to see what's painted on their masks. I love watching what different goalies do before the first period begins - and I don't just mean the stretching. I love watching how they scuff up their creases, what little mini-drills they do, and so on. Goalies of the world - stay sane, but please stay quirky! What a difference a network makes!Tonight I got an unexpected double treat. The TV guide said CBC's first broadcast would be NYR @ TOR. However, all three of Canada's eastern time zone teams had games tonight, so CBC stretched themselves to three simultaneous broadcasts - the Toronto game, OTT @ BUF, and PIT @ MTL. I think most of the nation, including us, got the PIT @ MTL broadcast, for which Cassie Campbell was on color commentary! Wooo!
Montreal beat Pittsburgh 6-3, and Crosby made a beautiful assist and set up some other chances, but only had the 1 point on the night (he's had 10 in the last two games). Pittsburgh played last night and it seemed they ran out of steam after a good first period. But the real story here is that while the broadcast team had plenty of well-deserved praise for Crosby and Malkin and Stall, they didn't make it sound like Crosby was Jesus Christ himself, sent here by God to deliver us from mullets and poor attendance and irrelevance. They actually discussed the game itself, while it was happening. How novel! And they discussed other players on both teams. Versus, take a note. (Edited to add: photo swiped from http://www.thelavinagency.com/canada/cassiecampbell.html) 12/11/2006 Give it a rest, VersusWhat is it with moronic TV announcers that compels them to generate fake drama? I'm watching PIT @ WAS on Versus (which is probably my first mistake), and to hear them tell it, you'd think only Sidney Crosby and Alexander Ovechkin were on the ice. Sid the Kid versus Alexander the Great! OMG! Oh, except for when they're pointing out that Evgeni Malkin and Ovechkin were teammates on the Russian Olympic team! But now they have to play against each other! Wow! That has never happened in the history of everything! At every other break in the action, we must put up a table comparing the achievements of these three players!
YES, WE GET IT. THEY ARE YOUNG SUPERSTARS IN THE MAKING.That doesn't turn a team game into an individual grudge fiesta. At the end of the second period, Pittsburgh scored two goals to bring the score to WAS 4, PIT 3. Bill Clement opens the intermission report with this doofball remark: "Now after 2 periods, doesn't this set up the kind of 3rd period we were looking for between Alex Ovechkin and Sidney Crosby!" Off camera, one of his co-anchors called out, "whooo!" I'm just surprised no one asked if he could "get an Amen." In further manufactured drama, during the first intermission, Malkin was interviewed and Ovechkin served as his translator. The first question was about how this was their first "meeting" as NHL players and I had to hit fast-forward to stave off some kind of insta-migraine or something. It's a good game. Stop ruining it with embarrassing and idiotic commentary. [player mugshots taken from ESPN] On the topic of hockey...
I really liked this week's feature on goalie warm-up drills. The first two drills were fairly dull but the next two were more interesting. Check 'em out: 12/10/2006 Chris CheliosI'm watching last night's DET-TOR game, and the announcer just mentioned that at age 44, Detroit defenseman Chris Chelios is older than SEVEN active coaches, including his own. Holy crap! Hell, LCS Hockey (which seems to be back -again!) was cracking "old" jokes about Chelly at least 4 years ago:
P.S. LCS Hockey, how about implementing a search feature for your archives? jeez it took me probably 20+ minutes of hunting and guessing to find that article. It was worth it though. That one passage was so funny and I've never forgotten the imagery. I think of it and laugh every time I see Chelios :-) 12/3/2006 T-birds 4, Giants 0 It's finally happened. This is the first year that boys born in 1990 are eligible to play in juniors. Wow. Those kids are YOUNG.Anyway, this was only the second game we've been to so far this year, thanks to a couple of conflicts with our trips to Alabama and Philly. They lost the first game we saw in October and didn't look terribly sharp. The T-birds were in 4th place (out of 5) in the U.S. division heading into last night; after last night's victory they've moved into 3rd place. However, they're well behind 1st place Everett in the standings.
Despite their so-so play this season (so far) this was Seattle's second victory this year over the B.C division defending champs, who are leading that division again this year. In fact, after the game, a graphic up on the jumbotron thingy stated that 2 of Vancouver's 3 losses this year have been to Seattle. Huh - theCultFigure remarked that you'd expect a team as good as Vancouver to be good at offense and defense, and they didn't seem to have either department working well last night.
The T-birds scored at even-strength twice, and once each while shorthanded and while on the powerplay. Great job T-birds! 10/19/2006 Atta boy, Marty!A friend pointed me to this AMAZING HIGHLIGHT of my former student, Marty Turco, making an unbelievable stick save during a shootout: Go to http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/columns/story?columnist=buccigross_john&id=2627943, scroll about halfway down to this part of the article:
There's a link that pops up a video player. The save is about halfway through the clip. WOW is right. Double WOW. Holy crap! 10/15/2006 Hockey Night in CanadaLast night's Coach's Corner was another classic. The pink feather stole and pink flamingo tie on Don are auction items to benefit some kind of breast cancer organization or other. Toward the end of the segment, he was praising Calgary's Dion Phaneuf to the high heavens and blasting the fact that he wasn't even nominated for the Norris trophy (outstanding defenseman) last year. He concluded his rant with:
Evidently it's only because Harry Neale was snowed in - but she did a great job and I'd be delighted to hear her again. I hope Harry Neale gets snowed in again :-) 10/4/2006 Hockeyyyyyyyyyyyy!I thought tomorrow was opening night, but I guess it's tonight! I'm happily watching Dallas @ Colorado, having tuned in about midway through the second period. Dallas has gotten 2 quick goals early in the 3rd period to tie the game at 2. My dear old pal Marty Turco's in goal for Dallas, of course. Wooo! And Jose Theodore's in goal for the Avs. Mmmm, Theodore...
OLN has renamed themselves the "Versus" network for this year. It did seem wrong to watch an indoor sport on "Outdoor Life Network". It looks like their camera work and lighting have improved over last year, though the announcing is still kind of dorky. Tomorow there are 2 games on CBC. Awwww yeah!! 6/27/2006 gossip/rumorOk, thatmathchick just sent me email about this. Evidently Paris Hilton and Jose Theodore have been seen in public together, possibly getting snuggly? A quick web search turns up several articles all saying basically the same thing, some with egregiously lame pun-tastic headlines:
On the one hand, good for her, I suppose. I'm trying to cut down on slut-shaming and sister-punishing. Cut Paris some slack. On the other hand:
Ew. That's not right. I can't get behind that. And "Cloutier"? Any relation to Dan, I wonder? 6/18/2006 Grapes looks like drapesHe wore this jacket earlier in the finals. It blew my mind then, and it blows my mind now.
on the plus side, GO EDMONTON! 6/11/2006 The HockeyOk, I am caught up on the Stanley Cup finals to date. As I noted the other day, Game 1 nearly killed me. It was a great game, no doubt about it, very exciting. But losing Roloson has filled me with dread and I fear for Edmonton for the rest of the series. Not that their backup goalies aren't professionals, but...
Game 2: I could not bring myself to watch the 3rd period - I just couldn't bear it. Gack. Let us never speak of it again.
Game 3: I was on pins and needles. The score was way too close for most of the game. WAY too close. Or worse: tied. I won't say I wasn't extremely relieved by the outcome. Why do I hate Carolina so much?
Through it all, Don Cherry has been wearing more and more outrageous suits with every passing day. I think he has truly lost his mind. Awesome. Go watch the clips if you don't believe me. Two of the last three suits have been constructed of what looked like couch fabric: absurdly loud patterns and colors. If he keeps it up, I may have to take a screenshot and post it.
Some of the extra coverage from game 3 was outstanding. Before the broadcast, Ron McLean interviewed Mark Messier, who's providing commentary for OLN's coverage. Pretty good interview, but the main reason I bring it up is theCultFigure hadn't seen him before and was mightily impressed with Messier's strong, imposing facial features. Seriously, you look at that dude and you're thinking, "Wow, I sure hope he's on our side..."
So after Saturday's game, Kelly & Scott were interviewing a couple of Oilers and taking questions from viewers. The questions come in via either the CBC website or as text messages to a Blackberry device. After they'd taken several viewer questions, Scott looked at the Blackberry and exclaimed, "This can't be right! It says here, 'Why is it best to be married in a church?' This is not my Blackberry, it belongs to one of the producers and... ok, we are not taking any more questions from the Blackberry tonight!" Hilarious. 6/9/2006 (!!!)I'm catching up on some hockey before we head out tonight... Game 1 almost killed me... more to come... 5/31/2006 Taking platitudes to a new levelI'm late in saying WOOOOO GO EDMONTON! YEAH! STANLEY CUP PLAYOFFS, WOOO! Anyway, so I'm reading an article about the keys to Edmonton's success against the Ducks in the conference finals, and came across this quotation from their head coach about goalie Dwayne Roloson.
I don't even know what that could mean. It sounds like a compliment though. 5/19/2006 When did THIS happen?I'm watching game one of the 3rd round of the playoffs, the EDM-ANA series. Since when do the Mighty Ducks dress like grown-ups? They're wearing their alternate home jerseys, and while I'm not sure it's all that attractive, it's a far sight better than the crap they usually wear. Is that new this year? Well done, Ducks.
Now, prepare to be obliterated by Edmonton! 5/10/2006 Must be some strong freaking Tylenol Ouch. I'm watching the EDM-SAN game #3 (it's just gone into second overtime). Earlier, Ryan Smyth had the misfortune of taking a puck to the mouth when Chris Pronger attempted to clear it out from behind the net. He immediately dropped his stick, threw his hands up to his face, spun around and dropped to the ice. He got up quickly and immediately went for the dressing room, leaving a huge puddle of blood behind. While they showed the ice crew SHOVELING up the partly-frozen blood, the announcers pointed out that the ref was skating off with some of Smyth's TEETH in a towel. I can barely imagine how painful that must have been. Chris Pronger's got a very hard shot, and Smyth wasn't that far from Pronger when he let the puck fly. But never fear, Smyth was back out on the ice not too long after getting his mouth stitched up, diving to knock a stray puck out of his defensive zone, no less... Make no mistake, he's a Tough Guy (tm)! 5/4/2006 Baah! The only first-round playoff series I was really watching (mainly due to lack of time to keep up with much else) was MON-CAR. After looking darn good the first two games, Montreal kind of collapsed in Game 3 after Koivu got injured and never totally recovered. I recorded Game 6 and was watching it last night. They were looking pretty good for a while, but sadly lost in overtime. Baah!
Interestingly, the top 4 seeds all advanced in the East, and the bottom 4 seeds all advanced in the West. Huh.
Since my hometown Flyers also lost their series (and from the sound of it, I'm glad I didn't see their game 6), there is just about no one I can root for in the East anymore. I guess Ottawa by default. And Edmonton in the West. They knocked off Detroit! Way to go, boys!
